The Spirit Bear, or Kermode bear (Ursus americanus kermodei), is a rare white-furred subspecies of the American black bear found only in the Great Bear Rainforest of British Columbia, Canada. Its pale coat is caused by a recessive gene, not albinism, and it is unrelated to the polar bear. Seeing one in the wild is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

With only an estimated 100–500 individuals in existence, this bear is one of the rarest animals in the world — even rarer than the giant panda. Most live on Princess Royal Island and Gribbell Island, thriving in dense temperate rainforest and along salmon-rich streams.

While the American black bear is listed as “Least Concern” on the IUCN Red List, Spirit Bears face unique threats, including habitat loss, climate change, and declining salmon runs. They are fully protected from hunting in their core range.
